The right choice of fire extinguisher when starting a fire is conditioned by the type of flammable substance. According to type of flammable substance distinguish the classes of fire:

Fire class A - fires of solid combustible substance (paper, straw, wood, coal, textile, plastics, etc.)

Fire class B - fires of flammable liquids (petrol, diesel, oils, paints, alcohol, etc.)

Fire class C - fires of  gaseous substances burning flame (propane-butane, natural gas, coal gas, acetylene, methane, hydrogen, etc.)

Suitable extinguishers:

  • Halon

Fire class D - fires of light alkali metals (magnesium and its alloys with aluminum)

Fire class F - fires of vegetable and animal fats and oils.

Other information:

An important condition for quick use of portable fire extinguisher is the correct installation. Fire extinguisher has to be located on easily visible and freely accessible place. Handle of fire extinguisher hanging on a vertical building construction has to be no more than 1.5 meters above the floor. Fire extinguishers located on the floor or other horizontal building construction have to be appropriately secured against falling. Fire extinguishers in vehicles or on machines have to be located as to could not endanger safety of persons.
